Dear pupils and parents,
Choosing a university is one of the most important decisions in a young person’s life. It’s not just about where you’ll study over the next few years — it’s about the person you’ll become, both personally and professionally. This marks the beginning of a journey that will shape your dreams, character, and future career. That’s why this choice deserves to be made with an open heart, with courage, and with clarity.
Remember: the right choice isn’t about perfection — it’s about what truly fits who you are.
I invite you to begin this journey of reflection by considering two essential questions:
- What is it that you truly wish to learn and become?
- How do you envision your day-to-day life during your studies and after graduation?
Once we find sincere answers to these questions, the path towards the right university becomes far clearer.
Why is it important to choose your university carefully?
A university is not just a place where you gain academic knowledge — it is where you begin to shape your professional identity, learn to collaborate with others, test your ideas, and grow both personally and emotionally. Making the wrong choice can lead to disappointment or sudden changes in direction, while an inspired decision can open unexpected doors to a future filled with purpose and fulfilment.

How I chose the right university: lessons and personal insights
Before sharing the steps I recommend for choosing the right university, I’d like to tell you a little about my own experience. When I made the decision to pursue an Executive MBA in the United States, I realised that it wasn’t just an academic choice — it was a decision that would have a deep and lasting impact on both my personal and professional life. I came to understand that in order to make the right choice, I needed to ask myself the right questions and give myself the time and space to truly reflect on my future.
In this spirit, I took an essential step: I connected with final-year students to gain a deeper understanding of what the programme truly involved — the challenges they faced, the opportunities it brought them, and the ways in which it benefited their careers. These conversations gave me a real and honest perspective on day-to-day life at the university and helped me gain much greater clarity about what I truly wanted from such an academic experience. I came to understand that it’s not just about choosing a programme — it’s about choosing a place that offers the right environment for both professional and personal growth.
I also took time to reflect on my personal and professional values and goals. I was looking for a university that would support my growth as a leader, encourage me to go beyond my limits, and connect me with inspiring people and valuable opportunities. After carefully weighing all these aspects and speaking with professionals and alumni in the field, I came to the conclusion that this university was the right place for me.
In the end, I realised that choosing a university isn’t simply about the subjects you study — it’s about finding a place that will help shape your future, both personally and professionally. An educational programme is a powerful opportunity to create a future that truly reflects who you are and who you wish to become.
What are the essential steps to choosing the right university?
Now that I’ve shared my personal story, let’s explore the key steps that can help guide you in choosing the university that’s truly right for you.

1. Know yourself
It’s important to begin this journey with honest self-reflection:
- What subjects and activities bring you joy and a sense of fulfilment?
- What tasks absorb you so deeply that you lose track of time?
- Which values matter most to you? (e.g. innovation, creativity, stability)
- Do you feel more at ease in a competitive setting or a collaborative one?
- Would you prefer to study in a lively city or within the calm of a quiet campus?
Take a moment to note your thoughts in a personal journal. These reflections are the first signposts guiding your path towards a meaningful and fulfilling future.

2. Set your priorities
The ideal university isn’t the same for everyone. What matters most to you?
You might want to consider:
- Field of study– which programme offers the best resources and opportunities in your chosen area?
- Academic reputation – how is the university recognised nationally or internationally?
- Career opportunities – which companies collaborate with the university? What internships or placements are available?
- Campus life – what is the student community like? Are there clubs, events, or societies related to your interests?
- Costs – can you afford to support your studies? Are there scholarships, financial aid, or other funding options?
Take time to reflect and prioritise what truly matters to you. These priorities will serve as a compass on your path to the right choice.
3. Do thorough research
The internet is a powerful resource — but try not to rely solely on official university websites. Explore a range of perspectives by looking into:
- Student forums
- Alumni experiences
- Reviews of lecturers and academic programmes
- Videos such as “a day in the life of a student at…”
Whenever possible, attend Open Day events or take part in virtual information sessions. These experiences can offer valuable insight into the atmosphere and opportunities each university has to offer.
4. Visit campuses or join online sessions
If you have the opportunity, take time to visit and experience the atmosphere for yourself:
- What are the buildings like? The library? The sports facilities?
- What are the students like? How do you feel while you're there?
If visiting in person isn’t possible, many universities now offer virtual tours and Q&A sessions with students or academic staff. Take full advantage of these opportunities — they can offer valuable insight into whether the university truly feels like the right fit for you.

5. Compare and evaluate rationally
Create a shortlist of three to five favourite universities. Jot down the pros and cons of each — from both an academic and a personal perspective. Take your time. There’s no need to rush. Give yourself the space to reflect and analyse everything with calm and clarity. A thoughtful comparison like this will help you choose a path that feels right — not only on paper, but in your heart as well.
6. Make your final decision with confidence
After exploring all your options, take a moment to ask yourself:
- At which of these universities do I see myself growing — both as a person and as a future professional?
- Where do I feel most inspired and encouraged to pursue my career aspirations?
Your final decision should be a thoughtful one — guided by self-awareness and conviction, not influenced by trends or the expectations of others.
